Gun Safety in New York State
Governor Kathy Hochul's top priority is keeping New Yorkers safe. In June 2022, following a racially motivated mass shooting in Buffalo and in July 2022, in response to the Supreme Court decision in NYSPRA v. Bruen, the Governor worked with the legislature to strengthen New York's nation-leading gun laws. These laws are designed to increase public safety and promote responsible, legal gun ownership.
Governor Hochul signed a 10-bill package in June 2022 that closed critical gun law loopholes exposed in the tragic shootings in Buffalo and Uvalde, TX.
Governor Hochul's FY 2023 Budget includes $227 million for bold initiatives to strengthen the gun violence prevention efforts of law enforcement and community-based organizations.
Governor Hochul created a new domestic terrorism unit to track and respond to extremist violent threats and increased resources for targets of hate crimes.
New Yorkers can call 1-855-LAW-GUNS with questions on New York's gun laws.
The hotline is staffed by State Police during normal business hours Monday through Friday.
